DARK BITES

Opportunities

Take part in DARK BITES 3

LOOKING FOR  WRITERS

DARK BITES is a new writing event: A curated selection of macabre and unsettling stories by Sussex writers, read aloud by actors. We have brought eleven chilling new tales from page to stage. Following our sold out debut at The Actors Pub Theatre on 17th Feb 2023, we took DARK BITES 2 to Theatre Royal Brighton, for 5 sold out shows over Halloween 2023. We are now looking for submissions for DARK BITES 3 which will take place in 2024.

WHAT KIND OF WORK SHOULD I SEND?

We are looking for short (5-10 min) dark pieces. Max 1600 words. They must be self contained stories rather than excerpts. They can be monologue, duologue, or mini play (for no more than 3 actors). We do also accept short stories, but they must work when read aloud.

We welcome ghost stories, dystopian fantasy, comedy horror, and anything that celebrates the darker side of storytelling. Some useful reference points might be Black Mirror, Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, Inside No. 9, The Midnight Club, and Tales of the Unexpected.

While we welcome work from everybody, we are committed to increasing diversity and inclusivity in our programming. We especially welcome submissions from LGBTQ+/ Queer writers, Global Majority writers, Working Class writers, and Female identifying writers.

If we select your piece, we will work with you to edit and enhance it for performance. This may involve making some cuts and changes. Any changes will be respectfully and collaboratively discussed.

Email your story to savagehearttheatre@gmail.com with the subject line 'DARK BITES 3'and a couple of lines about your writing experience. OR use the submission form below.

Submissions window opens 1st Nov 2023 and closes 31st March 2023.

Take part in BRIGHTON 24 HOUR PLAY FESTIVAL

LOOKING FOR  WRITERS, ACTORS & DIRECTORS.

We are inviting 5 writers, 5 directors, and a bunch of talented actors from Brighton to live on the edge! They have only 24 hours to write, rehearse, and perform 5 new mini plays on the stage of the Theatre Royal Brighton.

At 7pm, the night before the show, names are drawn, and writers are assigned a cast, a director, a theme, and a prop. They will stay up all night writing, and hand over their scripts at 7am the next morning. 5 creative teams will rehearse at the theatre all day, bringing the brand-new scripts to life, until the 7pm show deadline! The audience will have the rare opportunity to get close to the action, sitting on stage with the actors during this nail-biting performance. What could go wrong?'

This is a fundraising event for theatre projects. There is no fee and food will be provided. Emphasis is on fun, collaboration, and creativity.
